2010.06 - Deloitte

Thursday 10th June 2010

With Thursday afternoon's event fast approaching I thought it was best to give you an update on the final plans for the evening.

First of all, may I take this opportunity to thank Campbell Oswald of Deloitte for arranging our speakers and kindly allowing us to use a meeting room at Deloitte's offices at Brindley Place (map attached).

Our speakers are Will Gosling and Michael Jones and I have attached a brief background for both individuals.  As previously indicated we will be discussing Board Governance and Decision Making, this will briefly cover legalities but our emphasis will be on the softer issues, which no doubt we have all faced over the years (I know I have with my board / family!!) no matter what the size of the business.

Areas of discussion will include:

Board effectiveness - what tips or advice can we gain from each other on encouraging effective communication and decision making at board level.

Board Politics and Power  - dealing with issues such as instances where certain members of the board hold more power or influence over others and how to deal with circumstances where this can be detrimental to the decisiveness of the board.

Leadership Style & Director Development - What are the different leadership styles and how can they be used to improve board governance and effectiveness.  I have personally been on Director development courses and seen the benefits of learning for my own output, I trust that many of us round the table are able to share such experiences.

Executive and Non-Executive Directors - How can the relationship between ED's and NED's be best used for business growth.

Getting "Buy-In"  - from your colleagues on the board.  I am sure that we have all been in situations possibly where we have "pet" projects and need our colleagues to buy - in to them.  Are there any techniques to do this effectively?

These are only broad subject areas and you are welcome to add to any of the areas of discussion.  Please come along with loads of questions to spark some interesting debate as I have asked Will and Michael to steer away from lengthy formal presentations as we would like to have a very interactive business session facilitated by them.  I believe that by doing it that way we will be able to leverage each other's knowledge and experience and get the most value out of the meeting.  No doubt, as always what is said in the room will stay in the room.

The timings are as follows:

5pm                       Meet at the reception area of Deloitte

5.15pm                 Coffee and Introductions

5.30pm                 Round Table discussion with Will Gosling & Michael Jones commences

6.45pm                 Conclude discussion

7pm                       Dinner at Bank Restaurant, Brindley Place
